Helmut Hoyer (May 6, 1921 - Sept 27, 2009)

My grandfather in his 30's.

It is with mixed feelings that we announce the death of my grandfather, Helmut Hoyer, on the morning of September 27, 2009 at the age of 88.

We are saddened by the loss and remember the good times and good memories we shared together growing up. However, we are happy that he is beyond his troubled state now and in a better place.

Our condolences go out to my grandmother, my parents and siblings, and all of the immediate family.

The funeral service will be held Friday, October 2, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at End Time Message Tabernacle, 9200-156 Street, Edmonton, AB.

Last night, I wrote down the names of everyone who commented, blogged, or sent a tweet for the Starby Car contest (multiple entries where applicable). I put all the pieces of paper into a bag, and had Natasha draw out a name.

Charlotte's First Chess Lesson

Charlotte inspected all the different pieces.

As you can see, a very basic introduction.

Strategy will need to wait until we get past the "stacking" of pieces!

Starby Car!

I am happy to present Starby Car, my latest gaming project. It's a simple yet challenging game in which you must dodge oncoming vehicles and collect ice teas, with big bonuses for catching them in quick succession.

Starby Car!

To download this game, visit the game page on my website. It is a Windows program, but hopefully you Mac users (myself being one) can run it on an emulator as well.

A few special testers have really enjoyed the game so far, so download it now and give it a try!

Play and win!

Here's your chance to win big and have fun at the same time. I'm giving away a $5 Starbucks gift card to someone who qualifies by doing any of the following. Each will give you one entry into the draw.

1) Add a comment on this post (hopefully with a mention of your high score).

2) Post this exact line on Twitter:

@trooperscoop Play Starby Car and win!

3) Write a post on your own blog about Starby Car and link here. (You'll need to pair this with adding a comment to this post with your blog address so I know where to look.)

On Friday, September 25th, we'll draw a name and announce the winner. You'll be contacted to get your address so we can mail you your prize. Please indicate who you are, maybe some kind of email or website address so we can actually contact you.

Becoming An iPhone Developer

That's right! I have registered for a course to learn about applications development for the iPhone. As far as I can see, the iPhone and iPod Touch are a rapidly growing and very powerful platform, with no signs of slowing.

For much of my career, I've been doing the same old stuff, the last two years being an exception, and I want to take a risk and get into some technology that is on the cutting edge.

Today I picked up the latest operating system for the Mac, Snow Leopard. It will be a huge upgrade to what I currently have, and is required for running the development environment necessary to make iPhone apps.

What I need now are ideas for iPhone apps which I could use during the course, or as side projects to build as I learn. If you have any suggestions or ideas, send them my way. Post a comment, or if you want to email me directly, that'd be fine too.

July / Cruise / August 2009 Photo Slideshows

Since getting back from our cruise, we have been quite busy over the summer and just now completed our albums for July and August. Our cruise photos, which most of you haven't seen yet, are in their own album as it contains over 170 photos! Links to these albums are found in the left column, and also here for your convenience.
Also, Charlotte's Corner has been updated with 14 new photos from the last five months.

September 11 - Eight Years Later

It's been eight years since the morning I woke up, checked the CNN website and saw the initial reports of a crash, then heard the buzz of people talking on cell phones about it on the train to work. The day was a whirlwind of news, disbelief, and amazement.

WTC Collapse

Life has moved on, but we are still remembering. Hopefully someday I'll get to see ground zero. Natasha was there on her NY trip a few years ago, but even then there wasn't much to see. By the time I get there, there might be new buildings in place already.

iPhone App: Beetle Lines

The iPhone App Store is absolutely bloated with games, making it seem like the platform caters more to fun users as opposed to business users, and that is probably true. Still, finding games that keep you coming back isn't easy, and I have gone through quite a few.

One which keeps both Natasha and I playing is Beetle Lines.

The Beetle Lines game screen

In this game, you move individual beetles from place to place, lining them up in rows of five or more (the longer the line, the greater your points). Each time you move, a few new beetles sprout up, and existing "small" beetles grow to full size ones. There are some very interesting dynamics to the game, and since there is no time limit or penalty for slow play (new beetles only show up when you move), you can take your time to figure out what order you need things to happen in.

HINT: Don't like where the game just placed a new beetle? Press the "take back" button and repeat your move. You'll get a new result each time, and hopefully a favorable one.

This is a free app, and one which is well suited to those few minutes you have on the bus, while relaxing on the couch at home, or waiting in line.

iPhone: Emailing Multiple Photos

A co-worker recently informed me about an iPhone feature which I believe was non-existent up until the 3.x firmware: multiple-photo email attachments!

The process is easy. First, open the Photos application, and select an album.

Click on the "share" icon on the bottom left. The window will change slightly, allowing you to click on any number of images and either share, copy, or delete them. Note that a maximum of 5 photos can be emailed.

Once you have your photos selected, click Share, then Email (MMS is the other option) and you've got multiple photos within a single email. Who would have thought it possible?
