New Digital Camera

We bought a new digital camera a few days ago to replace the old one Natasha had from before we were married. It was a great camera but was just getting too old and it was time to upgrade. We stayed with the Sony brand since we had memory cards to fit, and went with this camera.

So far so good. We haven't had too much opportunity to test it but it handles well, and the smile detection actually works! Hopefully this means more and better photos from us, as well as more videos.

Chess For The Blind And Visually Impaired

There is blindfold chess, in which players with vision are not allowed to look at the board, and then there is Chess for the visually impaired. Pegged boards are used to keep the pieces upright, and smaller boards are used to "feel" the position, as the visual aspect is taken out of the game.

I am very impressed by these players as I think it would take a very sharp mind, great concentration, and a great memory to play like this.

Charlotte Walks!

... and we have a video to show you!

I talked to Natasha a few hours ago, and Charlotte had taken as many as six steps in a row. Not bad for no steps at all less than two weeks ago!

Trip To New Brunswick, Week One

Natasha and Charlotte have been in New Brunswick for a week now, and are having a great time visiting with family and friends. Here are a few photos of the trip so far.

Charlotte wearing earphones on the plane

I am told this was a temporary situation, until she got bored of the cartoon and realized she was wearing them. Still, it's a cute photo, and she had a good flight overall. Getting into the digital world early!

Charlotte and her friend Luke on a walk

Speaking of walking, we have big news:

Charlotte took her first steps!

Yes, as we expected, Charlotte has been taking little two-steps to get from a chair to the couch or person to person, and it's all happening while she's away from home. We knew it was coming soon as she's been standing up really well and walking along furniture for a few weeks now.

A video of her walking may be a ways off as it is hard to catch it when it happens but when we do we will post it.

This is good news, because she should be walking really well by the end of summer and will no doubt be able to enjoy a lot more of the outdoors than she has been able to.

Watch for the final trip report post once Natasha is back home next week.

Do Memories "Grow" Along With You?

It's funny how from time to time people get a flashback to a memory from years earlier. It's hard to fathom how many memories a person who reaches old age must have.

A memory that recently came back to me is a most intriguing one because it remains a mystery to this day. The event took place about 20 years ago, give or take a few. I was on the edge of a forested area with a few friends. On the ground is what I believe is a beetle, a massive one, dark gray, about 8 or 9 inches long and 5 inches wide, with a split down the back. All that I remember besides that is that one of the boys had a stick, and we may have followed it for a ways.

The questions start to pop up quickly. Do beetles of this type live in central Alberta, where I lived at the time? Not that we know of, and my Dad asked some type of biologist or something once, who confirmed the fact. Who were the guys I was with? I think I asked one guy I knew from back then, but he didn't remember. Was this a dream, or something I imagined? Maybe, but it's one of those memories that is clear and stuck with me, so I don't believe so.

Perhaps a more reasonable question is whether things you see as a kid grow in your mind as you yourself grow. Perhaps my memory simply makes me see the object in perspective according to the difference in size from then to now.

If you have any thoughts or ideas, or have seen giant beetles in unlikely places, I'd love to hear from you.

And She's Off!

Natasha left this morning to visit her Mom and family in New Brunswick. I talked to her on the phone once she landed, and her flights went well except for a very tight layover in Toronto resulting in the luggage not making it through to the final destination. Charlotte was her usual great traveling self, prompting comments from the other passengers around her.

We'll keep you updated on her trip and will post a few photos from time to time. As for me, it's bachelor life for the next 14 days. Don't worry about me though, I have a number of things to do around here, as well as a few places to go, so I'll be busy.

Have a good trip, Natasha!
