Scrabulous Removed From Facebook

Much to the dismay of many Facebook users, the Scrabulous application has been blocked to US and Canadian users after a law suit by Hasbro, who has the trademark for Scrabble.

I didn't find out about this until today, but I did notice that when I tried to play my games last night, I was unable to access the page. I wonder how many Facebook groups are popping up right now, petitioning for the return of their only reason for even logging into Facebook.

Nobody needs to get the shakes though, as the Scrabulous game is still available on the web at scrabulous.com.

Thoughts and comments are welcome.

Members Of The NEXUS Club

After almost three years of border difficulties and avoiding crossing unless absolutely necessary, we now have NEXUS. For those readers who are unfamiliar with the program, it is a way to become a trusted member, allowing access to special lanes at border crossings where you are identified by special cards (huge time savings) and submit import declarations on paper (in some ways this actually seems like more work).

The process of getting the NEXUS cards was actually pretty simple. We enrolled online, and after conditional approval, went to the office just across the border for final processing. And it was quick too, from start to finish was only a few days more than two weeks [individual results may vary].

I certainly look forward to zipping past the lineups the next time we cross the border!

Charlotte: Two Months Old

Our dear Charlotte is two months old today. We went outside to get a nice photo, and caught an interesting video as well.

Charlotte, 2 months old!

Later, while giving her a bath, she started to giggle! A friend had caught what seemed to be a giggle last week, but only today did Natasha and I see and hear it together. The video is about 20 seconds long, and the giggling happens right near the start.

A Walk In The Park

Last week we went out to see my parents and went for a walk at a nearby lake. We took the opportunity to get some casual family photos, and enjoy the great summer weather we've been having.

First Blog Visit By An iPhone

I pulled some stats for the blog today and found a really interesting one. What you see below are the charts showing which operating systems and browsers are the most commonly used when visiting the blog over the last day. There's a special addition to the list though... the iPhone! It's available now in Canada, has web access, and this is the first time I've seen a hit from it.

Patriotic Dessert Contest

It's become a tradition each year in the first week of July for each person (or team) in our family to submit a photo of their "patriotic dessert", either Canadian, or American themed. This year, they have been presented online for readers to vote for their favorite.

You can check them out and vote for them by clicking here: Patriotic Desserts

Charlotte's First Park Trip

About a week ago, we went to a nearby park for a little outing with Charlotte. It was a hot sunny day, so we found a shady spot under a tree, spread a blanket, and spent an hour or so relaxing. Here's a video clip:

The Company Summer BBQ

My office had its summer BBQ party on Saturday evening. The theme was Mexican, featuring fresh salsa and guacamole, beans and rice, and skewers of beef, shrimp, and jalapeno peppers. Add a "Price is Right" prize game, and a few rounds of Bocce ball, and a good time was had by all.

Here are a couple of feature photos, which all happen to include food (shouldn't surprise anyone).

Steve, the company owner, is the master BBQ-er, but I got to help a bit.

Corn, ready for the BBQ

Oh wow, this is something I'm going to do more of this summer, corn on the BBQ. I'm also proud of this picture, something like what you'd see in a food magazine!

Shrimp, Beef, and Jalapeno skewers!

BBQ season is in full swing, now that the warm weather has arrived. Natasha and I have been doing BBQ quite often... sausages, ribs, chicken drumsticks, and we hope to do quite a few more before the end of summer.

Canada Day 2008, New Rules

First of all, Happy Canada Day to all you Canadians! It's a beautiful day here in BC, blue skies and sun, but a more reasonable temperature than we've had the last few days. We are enjoying a relaxing holiday, BBQ-ing ribs for lunch, and visiting with friends in the evening. If we catch a few fireworks from our house, we'll be lucky, as I don't think being out past 11pm with Charlotte is a wise decision.

A few new laws come into effect today. The 2.4 cents per liter "carbon tax" is now being tacked onto the already high price of fuel. I won't get into this now, as I've posted about it before (here and here). I will say, however, that I hope the money will go to a useful purpose, such as extending rapid transit service out into Surrey, Langley, etc.

Another change today is that all children up to their 9th birthday must now sit in a proper car seat for their age and weight. This doesn't apply to me so I haven't looked into it in depth, but it means I'll be dealing with car seats of some type for a long, long time.

Anyway, for those of you on holidays today, have a great time! Those of you that have a holiday on Friday, you only have a few days to wait!
