Mini Putt

Mini Putt is the latest online game we've been playing. It's simple, fun, and keeps you coming back for one more try. For those who haven't played it, it's a mini golf course that you can play through on your browser. Be warned though, it will be nearly impossible to play just once!

Here is the score card from my best game with 26 strokes, and an impressive 11 hole-in-ones.

My best score: 26

2007 Taxes Filed

I just filed my taxes, the old fashion way... printed and in the mail. I have never filed electronically, and I'm not sure I plan on it either. I have come to enjoy putting together my envelope full of receipts and forms and dropping them off, knowing that some poor government worker will have to open it up and check it by hand.

Its almost like having some personal contact with the government...

Earth Day

Today is not Earth Day, that was yesterday. It's the one day a year when we can think about our impact on the environment, then get back to our usual polluting ways for the next 364 days.

What was my experience yesterday? I headed off to work in my reasonably efficient vehicle, enjoying the daily commute and listening to the morning news with the occasional commentary about our city's sad hockey situation. Approaching one of our many "skinny" bridges, traffic comes to a halt, and it soon becomes clear that there's been an accident. Easily 500 or more vehicles come to a standstill and idle contentedly, sending out rhythmic bursts of exhaust from their tail pipes. Nobody is thinking about Earth Day at that point.

I turned off my car during the longer waits, but I probably do it more to save the high priced fuel than the environment. As gas prices soar to new heights, it becomes more and more apparent that cost is not an effective deterrent for driving. If anything, there are probably more cars on the road than ever.

Do I care about the environment? Definitely. I want a clean and safe place for my family and I to live. But change won't happen without some larger changes being made to the way we do things as a society, and with the way things are going these days, it's a long way off. We can't even get a tax break on hybrid vehicles, let alone anything bigger.

Earth Day 2008 effectiveness, from my perspective: negligible

Quick Tax: The Downgrade

I picked up my usual copy of Quick Tax, planning to get my 2007 return in order before the end of the month. Quick Tax has turned my hate of doing taxes into a few hours of interesting data entry. I still wish I didn't have to do it, but at least it's not as painful as it used to be. Maybe I just finally figured out that it's not so complicated after all.

One thing has changed this year, however. Each copy of Quick Tax now only allows two returns for people making over $25,000. In the past, it has always been five. So for those of you who have been sharing a copy with family, or perhaps helping out a friend, those days are over.

Will I be going back to the paper method next year? Doubt it. The $45 is worth it, even if it's just for two. Just another way to gouge money, but the convenience is probably worth it anyway. It just hurts more when something is taken away, rather than always being that way.

A Walk By The Lake

On the weekend, our schedule was free and we decided to make the best of the great weather and spend some time outdoors. We drove back to the area we used to live in when we first got married and visited a favorite walking spot, Town Centre Park. Here are a few photos.

A calm lake, great walking, and mountain view

Natasha at 36 weeks, doing great

Spring is well on its way with new leaves

Nothing like a nice spring walk.

Few ducks to be seen, they must have been nesting

Hope you all have a good spring! Get out for a walk and enjoy your local parks!
